Just Transition Metrics

BSR collaborated with multiple organizations in an effort led by Shift to develop a core set of Just Transition Metrics. This foundational set of 19 quantitative sector-agnostic metrics can help businesses measure how efforts to tackle climate change are impacting people, including workers and communities. The full set of metrics are available for download on Shift's website.

The Just Transition Metrics focus on data that collaborating organizations feel companies could reasonably be expected to gather and disclose. They are intended to complement existing qualitative indicators and benchmarks to provide a more comprehensive picture of how impacts on people from climate action are being managed. The metrics also compliment PCAP’s suite of resources, namely the People-Centered Climate Action: Guidance for Private Capital Investors, which recommends that private capital investors develop indicators to track their own and investees’ performance.

Clear, decision-useful, and interoperable just transition metrics are considered critical for ensuring that social and inequality-related financial disclosures adequately reflect people-related impacts, risks, and opportunities linked to the transition to a low carbon and climate-resilient economy. The group submitted the metrics as a contribution to the Taskforce on Inequality and Social-related Financial Disclosures (TISFD), whose technical scope includes identifying a set of metrics specific to the just transition.
